Alkali Activation of Fly Ash in the Presence of Sodium Nitrate

The use of fly ash as a precursor for geopolymer has been investigated during the last decades various applications. aim this research was to study effect nitrate on formation and evolution ash-based geopolymers, in order assess their applicability waste immobilization matrices. These may be interest treat streams from agricultural runoff industries including nuclear industry. Fly alkali-activated using NaOH solutions alkalinities, which nitrates were added NaNO3. samples cured at 40֯C different periods characterized by X-ray diffractometry, Fourier transform mid-Infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), compressive strength measurements. content neo-formed crystalline phases geopolymers found lower than metakaolin-based systems studied previously. nature minerals formed nitrate-free differed those obtained corresponding geopolymers. Nevertheless, dominant phase presence sufficiently high alkalinity nitrate-cancrinite, reported regardless type fly-ash used. Although have promoting geopolymerization process it inhibit processes fly-ash-based FA-based suggests that these materials used immobilizing hazardous species, while containing nitrate-cancrinite can considered promising candidate radionuclides radioactive wastes.
